This is our second project in the Barbican Estate – a home and erstwhile showspace for the furniture designer and colourist Jennifer Newman. Our aim was to open up the layout and maximise the space of the main living area, to enable it to be usable for family gatherings or furniture launches.
The refurbishment included the conscious decision to expose and highlight the existing concrete basebuild wall in the kitchen area. This raw texture is contrasted with linear graphic wood flooring, and Jennifer’s choice of distinct accent colours throughout the apartment in the joinery and furniture. The use of stainless steel worktops echoes the original Barbican utilitarian and timeless interior palette.
The intention was for the resulting space to both embody and complement Jennifer’s bold sculptural and practical furniture, and reflect her creativity as an artist and designer.
