‘The Amber Road’ is a hiking trail spanning the entire length of the Latvian Baltic coast. The brief called for a series of rest cabins, sensitive to the various landscapes definitive of the region: pine forests, dunes, and white sand beaches.
Our concept celebrates Latvia’s traditional thatch and timber craft, whilst providing contemporary, secure and comfortable shelters. The vernacular materials used are partially exposed inside the cabins, resulting in an expressive enclosure for hikers to rest. The body of the cabins is then raised by stilts, for low impact upon the ground environment.
As visitors spend their days taking in the trail’s vast surrounding views, these cabins continue the unique experience into the night. One primary element is the glazed oculus skylight, with which hikers can lay back and gaze upon the stars.
